Charlotte Uens Student Award

This award is made possible by the donation of Stuart Uens in remembrance of his mother, Charlotte. The Uens family understood the value of working hard. They also made education a priority.

  • Selection Process

    The Community Foundation for Lennox & Addington (CFFLA) evaluates applicants in the following three areas:
    1. Financial Need
    2. Academic Competence
    3. Participation Portfolio (school, community, work, volunteer)

    Additional information may be requested by the CFFLA.

    All decisions are at the sole discretion of the CFFLA Board of Directors, and all decisions are final. All applicants will be notified by June of the year applied.

  • Obligations of Award Recipients

    Before the award can be provided the recipient must provide:
    1. Proof of full time post-secondary school registration including their student number.
    2. Name of post-secondary institution, including the mailing address of the Registrar, to ensure prompt payment.

  • SECTION 1: FINANCIAL NEED

    Understanding that the cost of education could be prohibitive for some students, Stuart Uens established this fund. It is designed to help those students who share the Uens’ values of hard work and education take that next step to a post-secondary school education.

  • SECTION 2: ACADEMIC COMPETENCE

    Mrs. Uens came to this community and taught full time in a one – room schoolhouse in Camden East. She was an avid reader, instilling a love of literacy in her students. As well, she partnered with her husband on their farm and raised her sons and cared for her parents. Throughout her life, she never lost her commitment to education. In her honour, applicants for this scholarship must demonstrate a love of learning and strong academic standing.

    The Foundation will contact NDSS to obtain your transcript. It does NOT need to be included with your submission package.

  • Teacher Reference: Please provide a short, written reference for this applicant. This should be a description of the applicant as a student in your class. This may include but is not limited to details about their work ethic, responsibility, ability to work collaboratively and independently and initiative.

  • SECTION 3: PARTICIPATION PORTFOLIO

    In addition to teaching and raising her family, Charlotte Uens was an industrious contributor to her community. Remarkably, until the age of 95, she was a member of the Maple Ridge Women’s Institute. She never missed a meeting and giving her world affairs report. Charlotte Uens understood that a well-rounded life involved giving back to her community. Successful applicants are required to show a commitment to his/her school and/or neighbourhood community.
