Peter A. Hayes Memorial Fire Services Fund created at the Community Foundation for L&A

The Peter A. Hayes Memorial Fire Services Fund has been established at the Community Foundation for Lennox & Addington to support individuals who wish to pursue formal education in fire services, as well as for fire training and equipment acquisition within Lennox & Addington County Fire Services, in honour of Peter Alan Hayes – a lifelong resident of Napanee.

“Pete served this community faithfully within the fire services for a combined thirty-seven years before cancer necessitated his retirement,” according to Louise McKee, who has established this fund to memorialize her late fiancé.  “Pete was passionate about local fire training and equipment needs, and I will by working with local fire officials – in particular, Stone Mills Fire Services – to  raise monies specifically for this memorial fund.”

Pete transitioned to the Stone Mills Fire Department  in 2017, following his age-necessitated retirement  from the Greater Napanee Department, where he had already served for 30 years.   Before retiring from Stone Mills in December 2023 due to significant cancer metastases, Captain Hayes was a valued member of Station 3 – Newburgh, where he was a leader and mentor to many.    Always willing to share his knowledge and experience with new firefighters, he left an indelible mark on many, and his passion for the job was clearly demonstrable to colleagues, peers and community members alike.

“The Community Foundation is honoured to be the steward of the Peter A. Hayes Fire Services Fund that will, in time, provide much needed support for our fire service,” said Bob Baker, Executive Director of the CFFLA.
